This will coincide with the First Friday events of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri on August 6 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Over 30 members of the church will be showcasing their art, including the works of Dr. Jean Chapman and his widow Nona Chapman, Dr. Raymond (retired orthopedic surgeon) and his wife Ann Ritter, retired art professors Bill Needle and Sam Bishop and his family. A variety of categories of art of varying themes will be displayed: oil paintings; watercolor paintings; woodcut prints; needlework art; photography; sculpture; drawings; quilts; and jewelry.
Also featured at the show will be an oil portrait by William James Hinchey (1829-1893). The portrait, which was painted and presented to the Church in 1880, was of Thomas Carr Baret, the Presbyterian Minister of the Church at the time. Hinchey’s work is currently on display at The St. Louis History and Science Museum. Hinchey’s most famous work, The Dedication of the Eads Bridge, painted in 1857, was displayed at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., for over twenty years. Hinchey was an assistant to George Caleb Bingham for several years and is now regarded as one of Missouri’s most famous artists. He was commissioned to paint oil portraits for famous people such as Ulysses S. Grant and Jefferson Davis.
The entire church will be open for viewing. Stained glass windows dating from the 1890’s can be viewed in the parlor of the church and a history and description of the stained glass windows will be available. Dr. Gary Miller, the Church’s organist and Associate Dean of the University’s Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts will be playing the organ during the event. Refreshments will be served.
