The Science Guy at The Library

by Hummie, from the Blog www.hummiesworld.com

Jason Lindsey, the Science Guy, is so much fun! I really enjoy watching the children interact with him. He is at the Cape Girardeau Public Library four times this summer, roughly ever other weekend. He will be there again on Saturday, July 10th and July 24 at 11 a.m.

Unfortunately, Jason marked is calendar wrong as 1 p.m. instead of 11 a.m. for that day and so when the initial group showed up at 11 a.m., the fast thinking librarian quickly shared a fun activity impromptu.

The children put water with dish detergent in a cup and covered the cup with a square of wash cloth material. A hole was poked in the side of the cup and a straw was inserted for blowing. With spray bottles in hand to spritz the cloth on top, the children blew bubbles everywhere! Wow. I was surprised! What a great inexpensive activity that can be done even at home. What a mess, if you can call clean bubbles a mess, was all over the room when the children were done. They are only getting started in this photo.

At 1 p.m., Jason presented his program all about, you guessed it, bubbles!

He taught about so much, yet my old brain did not retain it as I type this a week later, but I bet the children all remember! I do remember learning about how some ingredients made the bubbles stronger.

Jason brought dry ice with him to start the event off dramatically.

After sharing about dry ice, he added some "bubbles" to the bowl of dry ice and warm water and then carefully drug a cloth across the top of it. It was tricky and you can see from the children's faces how interested they are in what he is doing.

Once Jason got it just right, a huge bubble formed over the bowl. What fun it was for the children to pop it.

Next Jason shared how to make the bubbles strong enough so that the children could hold them in their hand. It brought big smiles!

Next, Jason shared with the children how to utilize alka seltzer in a bottle to blow up a balloon.

The children were all put into groups to play with this experiment on their own.

I love this photo because it shows all of their hands on the project at the same time. Wouldn't it be nice if the whole world cooperated like that?

Jason brought a child's blow-up pool for the incredible end to a fun day. He put his secret ingredients into the pool (alright, if you ask the children, I bet they can tell you what he put in!) and had each child take a turn standing on a stool in the middle of the water. He used a ring to bring a HUGE bubble right over each child! What fun that was!

Of course, it was a photographers haven as I snapped away. It was difficult for me to get both Jason and the child in the shot, especially with the children constantly moving in my way, while snapping at just the right second before the bubble burst. I managed to get a few good ones though! Here they are!
