First Friday Arts with Rachel Silvers
By Amanda Flesher

The month of May will be kicking off in full bloom, with a bouquet of local artists and entertainers busily booking and organizing local spotlights. One of our award winning local artists is setting the stage at Lodo's, in Downtown Cape, on the First Friday of May, May 7th, to display a collection of her graduate pieces, an exhibit she has dubbed, 'Suits and Mind'.  This casual event starts at 5pm and will also feature one of our favorite local bands, The Big Idea, taking the stage at 9pm.
Rachel Silvers is an accomplished artist, awarded Best of Show two years in a row at the Student Juried Art Show, in 2008 and 09; at Semo University, where she recently received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in 2D design and oil painting.

Rachel describes her pieces in the upcoming exhibit as "..mostly figurative and involve an intertwined theme...". At the heart of her theme, 'Suits and Mind', is the image of a female body "..representing the body as a suit", Rachel explains, "I call them lady suits".

There is quite a bit going on in the first week of May, so if you miss the reception you can still catch Rachel's collection on display at Lodo's for a few weeks following the show.

Friends are welcome to view an album of selected pieces, as well as a link for the event, on her Facebook profile. To get a sneak peak at the music, and learn more about the band, visit The Big Idea's public Facebook profile.

Being the passionate and supportive artist that she is, Rachel would also like to invite art lovers to attend the All Graduate Seniors Exhibition at the River Campus this Friday, May 7th, free to the public, from 5pm-7pm. Click Here for More on the River Campus event.
