Hiking Pickle Springs Natural Area

This is a part of our ongoing effort to encourage getting out of the house, doing something fun and healthy like Hiking!

Hawn State Park, outside Ste Genevieve, located between St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, MO off I-55 , is familiar to most outdoor enthusiast from this region.  We would like to share with you a few pictures and tidbits of information to spark your interest in some outdoor recreation.

We came across a blog about hiking through a part of Hawn State Park known as Pickle Springs Natural Area. The photos and comments are from a hiker and photographer who posted these on her blog, known as Hummie's World. Hummie's World is a blog about digital scrapbooking and I thank her for sharing this with us.

Pickle Springs Natural Area

Pickle Springs Natural Area is east of Farmington on Highway 32, then east on Route AA and north on Dorlac Road. This forest tract is a Designated Natural Area containing sandstone knobs, arches, canyons and cliffs.

This 262-acre Natural Area is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. It's located just 5 miles from Hawn State Park. Pickle Springs Nature Area features bluffs, hiking trails, unique sandstone formations, and hidden box caverns.

Some of the formations have been designated a natural landmark by the National Park Service. You may also see Missouri's only native pine tree, the short leaf, pinusechinata.

This is a shot of the Double Arch rocks. There were youth sitting above and they did not seem to be the least concerned that the smallest point had a huge crack in it.

It was a beautiful Spring day and many of the flowers were just beginning to open up.

At one point, early on the trail, we lost the trail and stood for a long time until I finally spotted where the trail continued on the other side of the creek. We had to climb down into the creek bed and back up. I was hopeful that the entire trail would not be so difficult, and it was not. I was a little worried for a bit though!

We came upon this beautiful rock overlook with the sun setting over it. I am not sure if it was the Owl's Den Bluff or the Dome Rock.
